Kabiru Shaibu Shaba - College of Polytechnics Jihlava (Czechy)
Hello, my name is Kabiru Shaibu Shaba, and I am a student at WSG University in Bydgoszcz. I was honoured to be selected as one of the outgoing students for the Erasmus+ program and had the opportunity to spend a semester at the College of Polytechnics Jihlava in the Czech Republic. Reflecting on my time there, I am filled with gratitude for the unique and transformative experience it provided.
One of the most significant aspects of my time at the College of Polytechnics Jihlava was the quality of education I received. The lecturers were exceptional, displaying a deep passion for their subjects and a genuine commitment to their students' success. Their teaching methods were not only engaging but also tailored to ensure that each student could grasp the complex material being presented. They made extensive use of practical examples, interactive sessions, and real-world applications to bring the coursework to life.
For instance, during my coursework in Marketing, the lecturer incorporated case studies from leading international companies, allowing us to analyze real-world scenarios and develop critical thinking skills. This approach not only enhanced my understanding of theoretical concepts but also provided me with practical skills that I can apply in my future career.
Beyond the classroom, my Erasmus+ experience was enriched by numerous cultural and social activities. One of the highlights was a trip to the Zleby Castle, organized by Zuzanna, our dedicated Erasmus coordinator. The trip was an excellent opportunity to bond with fellow Erasmus students from various parts of the world. Together, we explored the beautiful castle, delved into its rich history, and enjoyed the scenic landscapes of the Czech countryside.
Dominik, our tour guide at Zleby Castle, was outstanding. His detailed explanations and captivating storytelling brought the history of the castle to life, making it one of the most memorable experiences of my stay. This trip not only deepened my appreciation for Czech culture but also strengthened the friendships I formed with other international students.
While my overall experience was positive, there were challenges that tested my adaptability and resilience. One of the primary challenges was the language barrier. Although many lecturers and students spoke English, there were occasions when communication was difficult. This was particularly evident in administrative settings and day-to-day interactions outside the university. However, this challenge also became an opportunity for growth, as it pushed me to learn basic Czech phrases and improve my non-verbal communication skills.
Another area for improvement was the university's facilities. While they were generally adequate, some aspects, such as the library resources and study spaces, could benefit from modernization to better support the needs of a diverse student body. Enhancing these facilities would undoubtedly enrich the academic experience for future international students.
Living and studying in a foreign country for several months significantly broadened my horizons. I learned to navigate a different educational system, adapt to new cultural norms, and manage the practical aspects of living abroad, such as finding accommodation and budgeting. These experiences fostered a sense of independence and self-reliance that will serve me well in my future endeavors.
Moreover, the friendships I formed with fellow Erasmus students from around the world provided me with a global network and a deeper understanding of diverse cultures. Sharing experiences, traditions, and perspectives with peers from different backgrounds was incredibly enriching and highlighted the importance of cultural exchange in fostering mutual understanding and respect.
I am profoundly grateful to both the College of Polytechnics Jihlava and WSG University in Bydgoszcz for making this Erasmus+ experience possible. The support and guidance I received from both institutions were instrumental in ensuring a successful and fulfilling exchange program. This experience has not only enhanced my academic and personal growth but also ignited a passion for international collaboration and cultural exchange.
As I move forward, I am inspired to continue seeking opportunities that allow me to engage with diverse cultures and contribute to global understanding. My Erasmus+ experience has laid a strong foundation for my future career and personal aspirations, and I am excited to see where this journey will lead.
To sum it up, my semester at the College of Polytechnics Jihlava was a transformative experience that I will cherish for years to come. It provided me with invaluable academic insights, cultural enrichment, and personal growth. I encourage all students to seize the opportunity to participate in the Erasmus+ program and embrace the chance to broaden their horizons and expand their global perspectives.
